* Winemakers : Nicola Tucci & Mario Ercolino
*The Feudi di San Marzano in Apulia is the latest project by Valentino Sciotti, a man who is rapidly becoming known
as perhaps the most creative and dynamic force in the world of Italian wine. Sciotti is a man who not only dreams
big, but who has the vision, determination and professionalism to make sure that his dreams come true.
In the case of Feudi di San Marzano, Sciotti's concept is very simple to understand, and very difficult to find fault
with. Having stumbled upon the failing Cantina Sociale di San Marzano (a publically funded regional winery), Sciotti
immediately saw the potential. By making a few changes in the already state of the art cellar, and installing the
brilliant Mario Ercolino as chief winemaker, he would be able to produce modern wines with outstanding varietal
expression - in short wines that would change the way people think about Puglian wine.
The hallmark of Mario Ercolino's wines has always been the ease with which they convey varietal character, their
balance and their sheer delectability (Ercolino also oversees winemaking at Caldora in the Abruzze, and at Vesevo in
Campania, and was the original winemaker at Feudi di San Gregorio until departing a few years ago). With careful
management in the vineyards, where many vines are 100 years old, Sciotti expected that Ercolino's approach was
just what was needed to produce unprecedented wines.
Though San Marzano produces a large selection of wines, the single varietal wines are, unsurprisingly, the most
compelling. In each case Ercolino demonstrates a previously undiscovered dimension of a varietal, and a dazzling
intensity of dancing fruit. (Source : www.vindivino.com) |
