Presentation of the winery
For generations, both families, Calvo and Casajús have cultivated the grapevine and elaborated their own artisan wines, which were produced for their own consumption in old cave style wineries that today, are still preserved. They worked the land and they picked up the grapes, which where pressed in rudimentary wineries from which they obtained the must. This must was fermented in large wooden buckets, later on. After the fermentation process was complete, the wine was transferred to wooden barrels lodged in small stays and, usually remained there until the moment of consumption.
The elaboration of the Casajús Wines responds to that old tradition and familiar dedication: the knowledge acquired during generations, which long ago were used for general consumption, are now used for, with more modern techniques but respecting these origins, to elaborate the Casajús Wines. The dedication and the love to this world make possible at the present time that our wines are taken care of by José Alberto Calvo Casajús. Same hands, from the grapevine to the bottle.
José Alberto Calvo Casajús was born in Quintana del Pidio. This small town is located on the foothills of the north side of the Duero Valley that shapes the appellation of Ribera del Duero. He had the privilege of growing up in the bosom of a winemaking family, thus, he was exposed at a very young age to the wine making process and began to elaborate excellent artisan wine in this traditional winery. Until 1993 Jose Alberto was an active member of the local wine cooperative. At that time however, he decided to leave the coop and dedicate himself to bettering his own wines, a task that brings him great joy. Therefore, his love and passion for every aspect that surrounds the winemaking process encouraged him to found José Alberto Calvo Casajús Winery; a modern company equipped with advanced technology, but rooted with the familiar spirit that conservers the most genuine wines of the shores of the Duero.
