Red wines : Cienega Valley (AVA)

Cienega Valley Wineries are located about 25 miles east of Monterey Bay in their parent AVA. The San Andreas Fault runs through Cienega Valley Wine Country, defining the local terrain, and impacting the types of grapes that are grown by local vineyards and wineries.

Some of San Benito County’s best known wineries are located in Cienega Valley Wine Country.
Cienega Valley Wineries are affected by a moderate climate that is tempered by wind from the Pacific Ocean. Bordeaux and Rhone grapes thrive in Cienega Valley Wine Country including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. There are also cooler microclimates that excel at growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Located in the foothills of the Gavilian Mountain Range, Cienega Valley’s terrain contains a lot of limestone deposits. Burgundian varietals (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) love these conditions. The San Andreas Fault runs through Cienega Valley Wineries, and has constantly agitated the soil over the millennia.

Cienega Valley Wine Country has a long history of growing grapes and making wine that dates to the mid 19th century. French and German immigrants contributed to the development of Cienega Valley’s vineyards.
