The territory of the DOC wines of the Piave is situated in a vast plain that is bounded by the sea to the south and by the Conegliano and Montello hills to the northwest. These flatlands consist principally of sediment. Vines flourish in such soils, guaranteeing growers constant and abundant production.
In this area, as in other parts of the Veneto, it was once the custom to plant several varieties in alternating rows in the same vineyard. More recently, the need for more rational cultivation has led the growers to renew their vineyards. The new vitivinicultural approach was initiated about 30 years ago with the conversion of the vineyards to specialized culture. In the replanting, considerable space was dedicated to Merlot. It is followed by Cabernet and Verduzzo. Although they are not as significant in quantitative terms, Tocai Italico, Raboso, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Nero represent a new frontier where much innovation and experimentation are going on.
