Red wines : Verduno Pelavrega DOC

Until not long ago it was thought that the Pelaverga vine grown at Verduno, near Alba in Piedmont, was the same vine as the one grown on the Colline Saluzzesi hills. But it was established that these were actually two different varieties of vine, each with its own peculiar characteristics. The Pelaverga Piccolo was thus registered as an independent variety. The D.O.C. appellation followed in 1995. The area where this grape variety is produced extends across the territories of the municipality of Verduno and parts of the adjacent villages of La Morra and Roddi d’Alba, in the province of Cuneo.

Verduno Pelaverga is a very palatable, dry, velvety and well-balanced wine with distinct features. Its color spans from purple to ruby. Its bouquet is intense, sensuous, fragrant, and delicately spicy. It is best drunk young over local hors d’oeuvre meat dishes, such as the raw meat salad of the Langhe, lukewarm beef’s tongue served with Giardino sauce, veal with tunny sauce, vegetable flans, Tajarin, agnolotti, gnocchi and various risottos.
