The "Champigny" denomination can be added to the Saumur appellation for the greatest red wines grown in specially defined areas around eight villages near Saumur. The wines are made from Cabernet Franc (majority), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pineau d’Aunis (fairly rare).
The Saumur Champigny have a bright garnet-coloured robe, a complex nose, with spicy and burnt aromas. The limestone contributes finesse and lightness, with notes of red fruits and flowers (iris, violet). These stout, rich wines always show a fine and velvety tannic presence on the palate, and a fresh and balanced finish.
