The Goulburn Valley has a rich viticulture history dating back to the 1860s, and wine is still produced today from those first vines . The region has a distinctly warm, inland valley floor climate with an abundance of water for irrigation.
There are three main soil types, with the loose textured sandy, gravelly soils typically producing generous yields.
The main wine styles produced include Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne and Shiraz. The subregion of Nagambie Lakes has been established around Tahbilk and Mitchelton.
