Depuis plus de trente ans, Philip est un francophile confirmé et passionné par les vins. Malgré une carrière nécessitant des déplacements constants et des négociations ardues, il a pourtant réussi à étudier en vue d’obtenir le diplôme WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) et a ainsi acquis des connaissances théoriques importantes en matière de vinification et de viticulture.

J’ai maintenant compris ce qui est nécessaire pour maintenir et améliorer les niveaux de qualité du CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET et je me suis engagé à faire les investissements nécessaires pour les années à venir ».

Le vignoble a été créé par Patrick Germain en 1974. Les ancêtres de Patrick étaient des viticulteurs bourguignons partis en Algérie en 1840 et qui ont continué là-bas la culture de la vigne. Patrick est né en Algérie et a travaillé dans ce pays ainsi qu’au Maroc jusqu’à ce que les bouleversements politiques des années 1960 et 1970 le contraignent à un retour en France.

Il a dès lors, préféré créé son propre vignoble plutôt que d’en acheter un existant et cette conviction l’a conduit à créer le CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET. Il a trouvé un terrain approprié à Fronton –un très ancien vignoble dans la Forêt Royale de Fronton. Il était moribond depuis un hiver extrêmement froid en 1956. Fort de son expérience, il a re-créé le domaine au moment même où les Côtes du Frontonnais passaient en Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée. Estimant que le domaine avec ses excellents terroirs et son ensoleillement favorable fournissaient les bases pour un vignoble de premier plan, il a rassemblé une équipe dont certains avaient travaillé avec lui en Afrique du Nord, et il a disposé cette grande surface (112 ha de vignes) d’une manière logique et aisée à entretenir.

Quatre ans plus tard les fruits de son travail se sont vus récompensés avec la première vendange et mise en bouteille de la cuvée Classique Rouge qui allait gagner de nombreuses récompenses et ainsi consacrer BELLEVUE LA FORET comme le fleuron de Fronton.

hristian Ivorra – maintenant Directeur Technique au CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET – a été l’un des premiers à rejoindre l'équipe et y a consacré sa carrière entière. Diane Germain-Apercé – la fille de Patrick – a rejoint l’équipe en 1991 après deux années d'expérience professionnelle et un diplôme de commerce obtenu à Northeastern University à Boston aux Etats-Unis. Diane dirige maintenant toute la partie commerciale et le marketing.

Aujourd'hui le vignoble de 112 ha (270 acres) est la plus grande propriété privée d’un seul tenant du Sud-ouest de la France. La gamme qui, au début était constituée d’un seul vin rouge, s’est élargie à 6 vins rouges et deux vins rosés, et est régulièrement récompensée lors des Concours Nationaux ou Internationaux. Elle attire une large palette de fidèles consommateurs. Les vins sont vendus en France dans le circuit traditionnel : restaurants et cavistes et sont exportés dans une vingtaine de pays dont le Canada, les Etats-Unis, l’Allemagne, la Suisse, la Belgique, le Japon, l’Irlande, le Royaume-Uni, la Pologne et la République Tchèque. La Chine et l’Extrême Orient apparaissent désormais comme de nouveaux et passionnants marchés pour nos produits.

About the winery

Philip has been a confirmed Francophile and passionate wine enthusiast for over thirty years. Despite a business career that required constant travel and high pressure negotiation he still managed to study the WSET Diploma in Wine Studies and so gained considerable theoretical knowledge of wine making and wine growing areas.

“Theory is all very well”, he says, “but seeing those concepts that I studied come to life at CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET is a deeply satisfying and fulfilling experience. I now understand what is required to maintain and improve the quality standards of CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET and I am committed to making the necessary investment in the years to come.”

The vineyard was founded by Patrick Germain in 1974. Patrick’s ancestors were Burgundian winegrowers who moved to Algeria in the 1840’s and continued their winegrowing there. Patrick was born in Algeria and worked there and in Morocco until the political upheavals of the sixties & seventies forced his return to France.

His preference was to create his own estate rather than take over an existing one and this conviction led to the creation of CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET. He found suitable land in the Fronton –a former vineyard in the Forêt Royale. It had been moribund since the extreme winter, the “gel” of 1956. Bringing all his experience to bear he re-created the estate just at the time the Cotes de Frontonnais received the status of AOC (Appelation d’Origine Controlee). Judging that the domaine with its excellent soils and assured sunlight provided the basic ingredients for a first class vineyard he gathered together a team, many of whom had worked with his family in North Africa, and laid out this large area – 112 hectares of vines – in a logical and easily maintained manner.

Four years later the fruits of his labours were to be seen in the first harvest and bottling of the Classique red which was to go on to win multitudinous awards and establish BELLEVUE LA FORET as the “fleuron” of Fronton. Christian Ivorra – now winemaker at CHATEAU BELLEVUE LA FORET– was one of the first to join the team and has spent his entire career there. Diane Germain-Aperce’ – Patrick’s daughter – joined in 1991 after two years of work experience following a business diploma in Northeastern University in Boston USA. Diane now heads up all sales & marketing activities.

Today the 112ha (270 acre) vineyard is the largest single privately owned wine estate in the emerging Southwest of France. The wines – which have developed from a single red to a range of six reds and two rose’s - are regularly awarded medals in competitions worldwide and have gained a wide array of loyal consumers. The wines are sold in wine shops and restaurants throughout France and are exported to more than twenty countries including Canada, the USA,Germany, Switzerland,Belgium, Japan,Ireland, United Kingdom and Central Europe. China and the far East are now emerging as new and exciting markets for our products.
