If you were driving along the Med in Languedoc, not long before you hit the Spanish border you would pass though a town named Banyuls sur Mer – you would be well advised to stop! This lovely wine from that town is a dark purple fruit bomb. It is powerful, and has a nice bite, probably courtesy of its 14.5% alcohol content but goes so well with food I cannot begin to tell you. Lots of earth and leather on the nose as it opens, but the Grenache adds a sweetness that stops short of being overpowering. I really enjoyed this wine – but warning, every time I have drunk it I get a raging headache. Maybe the tannins, maybe the 14.5% alcohol, but it is so smooth and engaging I don’t care – gimme those aspirins!!!
