About the winery

Arriving in Castigno is like stumbling upon the end of the world. The vineyard seems to have been set in an antique garden, with its stone walls and tortured vines reminders of times gone by and of the history of the land.

The Castigno vineyard lives and breathes in a unique micro-climate, between the woods and the rocks, the truffle oaks and the dense garrigue. It is from this wild and preserved nature that the vine draws its concentrated aroma, its uniqueness and its richness.
At times at the mercy of the violent winds and devastating rains, the piercing cold or smouldering heat, at others enjoying the Mediterranean serenity, the vineyard draws its personality from this battle of the elements.

It is a place that is both appeasing and violent, a wild place, an authentic place, dominated by the Château de Castigno, a true relic of the past. Owned by the Order of the Knights of Malta until the French Revolution, the oldest stones of the Castle were erected by the Knights Templar.

It is an original landscape. Paradise regained.

Consumer Reviews - Château Castigno 2008

Caroline Henry  Vinoaddict - from 21 to 75 reviews    Hautvillers  (France)
Complex and elegant food wine
Lovely wine which really stood out in the blind tasting at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
Black fruit, cedar and a little fresh leather on the nose, great tanin structure, good acidity and weight, some bramble and mulberry in the middle palate and hint of cedar in the lingering finish. Again this wine will benefit from decanting and I would cellar the wine a few more years as well.
This was the 4th time I tasted this wine - and every time it has pleasantly surprised me :-)
Tasting date : 03 Nov 2011
Maturity : Wait for 2-3 years
Meaning on the maturity : The wine can be drunk today - some aeration will bring out more of the fruit flavours however I do believe the wine will show it's real complexity and elegance after a few years of cellaring.

**** Very good
Vibrant colour, quite complex and intense on the nose. Preserved red fruit, some dried flowers. On palate, nice ripe plums, warm, velvety tannins, some fruit on the finish. Nice wine.
