A little too thin
A little late to the party I am still learning to like Bordeaux wines, but I believe I am now a believer. This is a dark red to purple wine with a lot of the fruit and earthy nose that seem to be a Bordeaux standard. It has a big rush of dark fruit on the palate and a touch of mineral and tannin. The tannin subsides with sufficient time in the glass, but the minerals persist. The finish is lengthy and maybe just a bit too tart. I have a few other years of this that I am willing to give a try.

Not terrible but unimpressive
Dark red, moderate fruit and some earth on the nose. Fruit character was somewhat muted and there was little character to the mouth feel. Tannins were mild and the finish was very short. Truthfully this is the best vintage of this vineyard I have had and it was still less than remarkable. I would have paid $10 and felt that I got what I deserved, but for $19, not so much.

1998

Razor thin but not sharp
“How can you complain about an $18 Bordeaux” you might ask? Actually quite easily because I have had some stellar $18 Bordeaux. I got this ’98 at a “big box” wine store so I should have expected – I seldom find real “steals” there. This was, harkening to its name, paper thin in taste and body. To be fair, it had the backbone of a Bordeaux, but it had never developed. The cassis and dark fruits never showed up with enough force to redeem it, though they spent their time lurking in the background. I cannot be disappointed, except that I had anticipated so much more.
