This is one of the oldest great growths in Bordeaux. The vineyards were first planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest son of a noble family from Bordeaux. He was elected Pope in 1305, during the reign of Philippe le Bel, and took the name of Clément V. Château Pape Clément belonged to the Archbishop of Bordeaux until the French Revolution. Wine has been made here continuously for 7 centuries.

Viticulture : Guyot double pruning method - ecologically minded viticultural practices - leaf thinning and bunch thinning.
Winemaking : The grapes are initially sorted in the vineyard, hand-picked into small crates, manually destemmed, and then put into wooden vats by gravity flow. Cool pre-fermentation maceration. Manual punching down of the cap. The wine is run off directly into new barrels via gravity flow, without any pumping. It is then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Yield : 25 to 40 hl per hectare

XO-Vin.fr En 1299, Bertrand de Goth, cadet d'une noble et riche famille dont les biens s'étendaient sur le Bordelais et le Bazadais, est nommé archevêque de Bordeaux par le Pape Boniface VIII.Honoré, comme toute la famille, par cette nomination, son frère, Bréaud de Goth, lui offre sa propriété de Pessac. Elle se compose alors de bois, de prés et surtout de vignes s'étirant sur une longue groupe graveleuse entre Magonty et le chemin de Mérignac : en largeur, le vignoble va de la route d'Arcachon à la seigneurerie de Veyrines. Le 20 juin 1305, Bertrand de Goth est choisi pour Pape sous la pression de Philippe Le Bel : il prend le nom de Clément V. et appelle ainsi son domaine "Pape Clément". En 1309, il fit donation de son vignoble à l'archevêque de Bordeaux, lequel le transmit à ses successeurs jusqu'à la Révolution française.Ainsi ce domaine est-il l'un des plus anciens Grands Crus de Bordeaux. Il peut s'enorgueillir d'avoir produit du vin sur la même terre pendant 7 siècles.Depuis 1959, Pape Clément appartient au cercle restreint mais officiel des Grands Crus Classés de Graves.Le Clémentin du Pape Clément est le second vin de la propriété.Toute la vinification est contrôlée par Michel Rolland.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate #188, April 2010 A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Pape Clement is not as dense or provocative as the 2005, but it is a worthy competitor. Tighter and more muscular than the 2005, the 2009 reveals an opaque purple color along with notes of graphite, blueberries, and blackberries, stunning richness, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and tremendous length and intensity. Some patience will be required, and I do not believe this effort will achieve the near perfection of the 2005, but it is another winner in this extraordinary vintage. Yields were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine finished around 13.5% alcohol. (Tasted four times.) Historically one of the oldest vineyards in Bordeaux (having once been owned by Pope Clement, who gets more credit for what he did in Chateauneuf du Pape than in Graves), this 700-year old Pessac vineyard has turned out another profound wine under the administration of proprietor Bernard Magrez. Rating : 95-97+
