About the winery
Family Martinez Bujanda comprises 3 Bodegas which, although very different, all have one common denominator: to make wines using grapes sourced from our own vineyards, all of which are located in privileged locations.
When our great grandfather Joaquin Martínez Bujanda founded the business in 1889, he knew that controlling his own grape supply would be critical to achieving the high level of quality he demanded for his wines. This vision forms the cornerstone of our strategy today, as this allows us to control quality levels and innovate in all aspects; from the exhaustive and constant monitoring of the grapes in our vineyards, up to the moment when the wine is served in the glass.
For these reasons different generations of our family, including today´s, have continued to seek out the best vineyards from each area. As a result of this policy we are now the proud owners of more than 280 hectares (over 700 acres) of vineyards in La Rioja, of which we would highlight the Finca Valpiedra single vineyard estate with 80 hectares (200 acres-photo on the left).
Our most recent acquisition is a spectacular vineyard of 1000 hectares (2500 acres) in La Mancha (see Finca Antigua)
Each of our wineries and their wines from Familia Martínez Bujanda have a unique and distinctive character, often determined by the idiosyncracies of the vineyards and fruit which are used to make them. Finca Valpiedra represents a new way of understanding Rioja wines through a chateau approach to winemaking, whilst Finca Antigua is increasingly being recognised as one of the most exciting and creative wineries in Spain.
