About the winery

The slopes of Apalta in Colchagua (in the Central Valley) have a half-moon shape, with a unique micro-climate, defined by the mountains and Tinguiririca river. The best slopes in this valley, with a 45° average inclination and over 49° in the upper slopes, are found on our estate where we grow the grapes for our MONTES ALPHA "M”. Having a south-west exposure allows us to have exactly the right level of hours of sunlight (measured in degree days). The ocean breeze (only 80 kms/50 miles away) provides a cooling efect, ideal for slow maduration of the grapes. The warm days but cool winds at night with their lowering temperatures give a micro-climate particularly suited for growing red grape varieties. Add to this, the poor soils with a small organic composition, drip irrigation, and the high density of vines (over 6,667 per hectare) make growing conditions perfect.

Purple Angel 2006 has a distinctive intense purple color with delicate hints of chocolate and cigar box aromas. The wine is a blend of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot from the Colchagua Valley. The Carmenère grapes are sourced in equal parts from our Apalta and Marchigue vineyards. The Carmenère from Apalta adds sophistication and subtlety to the blend, providing chocolate, vanilla and tobacco aromas, due to the combination of dark fruit flavors and the spiciness typical of the variety while the grapes from our Marchigue estate, provide potency and color to the wine creating a fine balance of power and elegance. The blend is finally enhanced with Petit Verdot to provide structure and at the same time wild flavors of black berries. On the mouth, it is full bodied, with a generous amount of ripe tannins giving grip and depth to this lovely wine. Harvest: The 2006 harvest was ideal for Carmenère. A long hanging period (longer than previous years by 3 weeks) with excellent weather conditions allowed Aurelio Montes to wait until the grapes reached their optimum ripeness. Winemaking: Grapes are carefully hand picked. Clusters go through a grape by grape selection made by hand with a team of 14 people, in which only good fruit is allowed into the tank. During the 18 months of barrel aging, the wine is racked 3 times to get rid of lees, and allow some oxygen to interfere in the evolution and maturation of this wine.
