Opus One a été créé en 1978 par le Baron Philippe de Rothschild, propriétaire légendaire de Château Mouton Rothschild et par le célèbre producteur de vin de la Napa Valley, Robert Mondavi. En épousant les traditions et les innovations vinicoles des deux familles, l’objectif des partenaires était de créer un vin d’exception au cœur de la Napa Valley. Le premier millésime d’Opus One fut produit en 1979, vinifié et élevé en fut de chêne au domaine de Robert Mondavi. C’est à l’automne 1991 que Opus One célébrera l’inauguration de son propre domaine et sa première vendange.

About the winery

he winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi to create a single Bordeaux style blend based upon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It is located across State Route 29 from the Robert Mondavi Winery. The creation of this winery venture in 1978 was big news in the wine industry; de Rothschild's involvement added an air of respectability to the burgeoning Napa wine region.

A voluptuous garnet, the 2005 Opus One offers concentrated aromas of blueberry, rose petals, white truffle, liquorice and nutmeg. Flavours of cassis, black olives, raspberry and dark chocolate.The opaque purple-hued 2005 exhibits an extraordinary nose of violets, creme de cassis, charcoal, and spring flowers. Gorgeously pure, opulently full-bodied, with sweet tannins, superb concentration, and a low acid, ripe, tannic finish, it tastes like a top-notch vintage of ripe Bordeaux, but made in California. It can be drunk now and over the next 20-25 years. Bravo! (Wine Advocate # 180, Dec 2008 Robert Parker )With a new winemaking team in place, and no longer any influence from the Mondavis, it is ironic that Opus One appears to have produced its greatest trilogy of vintages to date. This wine has always been more about sizzle than substance. While some top wines have emerged, others have been riddled with brett as well as lacking in concentration. That accusation can not be made against any of these three vintages.
