About the winery

Fitapreta produces wines that reflect our character, what we like, what we aspire, our mood and our perception of esthetics. We are as much about diving deep in our culture and varietals, as we are about changing the world with news trials, new tastes and new blends. We produce the wines for us, for us to like it. And hopefully, some people will share our same esthetics for wine and… Who knows… For life.

“A 23 year old winemaker and English Viticulture it could only go wrong” Portuguese winemaker António Maçanita and resident English viticulturist consultant, David Booth met for the first time in early 2004. Over the next few months António was learning viticulture with David and a close friendship developed. Next step doing some wine, first wine, first success, with Trophy Alentejo Award by IWC, given the second time in 22 years of competition.

Drink it now!! It is rising to its peak!!!
The 2008 PRETA is 22% Aragonez, 46% Touriga Nacional and 32% Alicante Bouschet. Showing its oak too much on opening, it nonetheless develops well, the concentrated mid-palate showing fine depth and soaking it up. There is also steel underneath, a real backbone even if well integrated. This juicy wine is beautifully balanced and quite elegant, well focused and simply delicious. Give it another couple of years to absorb some of that vanilla; it may yet have some upside potential. Drink now-2019.

This array of wines from Fitapreta and winemaker/co-founder Antonio Moita Macanita is unusual to say the least. The emphasis on interesting whites largely succeeds, in a way that Alentejo usually doesn’t with whites. The array of oddities, from amphora-fermented wines to whites from a red grape, works well. Just to top it off, the 2008 Preta is this company’s best wine yet.

Fitapreta owns no vineyards, but controls what it uses, says the winemaker. Notwithstanding that, there is encouraging progress here, the best results yet from this young operation. Mark Squires on ERobert Parker
