Pontet-Canet has always been a legendary Médoc. It is deep ruby-red, crimson, and sometimes almost black colour and has a characteristic bouquet of black fruit (especially blackcurrant), liquorice, and prune as well as fig, cedar, and sometimes cocoa overtones. Pontet-Canet combines power and elegance, as well as concentration and fullness on the palate. Rather sinewy in style, Pontet-Canet is clearly a classical wine with a tannic structure that provides excellent ageing potential. The château team is conscious of the fact that they are following in the footsteps of more than three centuries of tradition, with each period contributing its technical innovations in the interest of quality and in order faithfully to reflect the terroir. Château Pontet-Canet and the estate's second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet, are sold exclusively via the Bordeaux wine trade.

Winemaker: "Very intense colour. Very strong nose, dominated above all by fruity notes and a high mineral content. Cultivation methods add a touch of additional complexity. Strong palate and full-flavoured. The wine is structured, with very smooth tannins. The finish is long and savoury."

Experts’ opinions
Robert Parker Robert Parker
Apr 2007 - "One can’t say enough about the extraordinary quality proprietor Alfred Tesseron has achieved at Pontet-Canet over the last decade. The 2006 is another massive wine that may be as backward and concentrated as its nearby neighbor, Mouton Rothschild. Boasting a dense purple/black color in addition to aromas of creme de cassis, incense, burning embers/charcoal, and pain grille, it is monstrous in the mouth with huge flavor concentration, extremely high tannins, and significant extract. Tesseron’s goal appears to be a 50+ year wine. The 2006 requires a decade of patience. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2040+."

Château Pontet-Canet's estate finds itself in the heart of Pauillac's Appelation. In 1975, the reputable cognac collector and me r chant , Guy Tesseron, became its new owner and today, his sons Alfred and Gérard have carried on his legacy and have progressively restructured the estate. Starting with a model vat house: influenced by the Eiffel style and constructed at the end of the nineteenth century, the oak vat room was revolutionary for its time as it was designed on two floors enabling the harvest to be received on the top floor and thus to be poured by gravity into the vats below. Inspired by its innovation, 2005 has given way for a new vat room unique to the Médoc, still respecting the gravity concept yet modern. The Inox vats have moved on and left room for smaller cone-shaped cement vats, enabling a vinification in smaller volumes and therefore a better selection thus more precision.
