"Tasting at Janasse is fun. It is a large estate of 195 acres with 45 of them situated in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Even if you weren’t obsessed with their fabulous chateauneuf-du-pape, they have a portfolio of brilliant wines from Cotes du Rhone as well as a vin de pays. Young proprietor Christophe Sabon, working with his wife and father, continues to fine-tune his winemaking skills. He is already brilliant at reds and shows increasing confidence in the quality of his white wine cuvees."

Well they can't all be winners
Boy, reading the Spectator and Advocate notes on this wine I think I must either have the worst taster in the world or I got a funky bottle. My Janasse was neither perfumy nor lilting. It was in your face fruit and a “burny” character that lasted throughout. Time in the air did not help it and perhaps even hurt it. It was certainly not the worst wine I ever had, or an 87 would have been out of the question, but it wasn’t the almost classic I’d been led to believe. In it’s defense the cork had wine all the way to the top so it perhaps got cooked at some point. I believe I have another in the cellar, and I am hoping that one is OK.

Not a terribly impressive "Terre"
Fruity but restrained, minerals and herbs that are short lived on the palate. Pleasant but unremarkable. Smooth tannins, quite good with a light dish.

A certain Janasse sait quoi...
Deep violet, almost purple color. This rich wine was warm and full bodied, with great earth and dark fruit on the nose. The palate was treated to cassis, blackberry , cocoa and a tinge of minerality on the end. A long finish with mild tannins that probably would clear with more cellaring. Decanting an hour before helped deliver a great experience.

Got this for a steal
Yes it was a terrible year, but SOMEBODY had to be making good wines! Janasse is a name that we all recognize for a quality product and even 2002 didn’t disappoint. There was all the fruit and spice, earth and “terroir” that marks a typical CDP. This blood red (venous not arterial!) nectar started strong and finished stronger. The year was the reason for the price ($25), otherwise it would have been $35 or $45, so I’ll be glad to take advantage Monsieur Janasse!

Presentation of the winery

The domain was created in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. It actually covers 50 ha (122 acres) of vineyards distributed among different appellations : Châteauneuf du Pâpe, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. This family exploitation takes the best cares in harvesting the grapes and in vinificating great wines in the most pure tradition.
